About Wimauma

Wimauma is an unincorporated community in southeastern Hillsborough County. Captain C.H. Davis founded it in 1902 at the midpoint of a railroad he built between Turkey Creek and Bradenton, naming it by combining the first letters of his daughters' names: Wilma, Maude and Mary. A post office opened in 1902 and a railroad depot followed in 1903. Wimauma was incorporated in 1925, but its local government stopped functioning in the 1930s.

Wimauma lies east of Sun City Center and south of Balm, and it borders Manatee County to the south. State Road 674 runs through the center of town, and U.S. Route 301 forms part of its western border. Lake Wimauma sits near the center of the community. The Little Manatee River runs nearby, along with Little Manatee River State Park and the county's Little Manatee River Corridor Nature Preserve.
