About Valrico

Before the Civil War the area was called Long Pond. In the 1880s William G. Tousey, a Tufts College philosophy professor, bought land there, and the name changed to Valrico, which is described as Spanish for "rich valley." The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad arrived around 1890, and Tousey built stores, streets and a bank. Growth picked up again in the mid-1950s after SR 60 was connected to Tampa's Adamo Drive.

Community facilities include Stearns Road Park, with a paved trail, picnic shelters and courts, and the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library on Bloomingdale Avenue, which serves east Hillsborough communities including Valrico. Nearby, Lithia Springs Conservation Park and Alderman's Ford Conservation Park sit along the Alafia River.
