Homes for sale and local insight in St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg sits on the Pinellas peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf, and it borders Boca Ciega Bay to the west. The city is in Pinellas County and has a long waterfront downtown on Tampa Bay. The Gandy Bridge and the Howard Frankland Bridge cross the bay to Tampa, and the Sunshine Skyway runs south to Manatee County.
The modern city grew from waterfront land that John Constantine Williams of Detroit bought in 1875. In 1888 Williams transferred part of that land to Peter Demens, who brought the Orange Belt Railroad to the settlement. Local legend says the two flipped a coin to decide who would name the town. Demens won and named it after Saint Petersburg, Russia. St. Petersburg was incorporated as a town in 1892 and as a city in 1903. In 1914 Tony Jannus flew across Tampa Bay on what is often called the first scheduled commercial airline flight.
Downtown St. Petersburg has a museum district that includes The Dalí Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Chihuly Collection and the Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Public murals appear across the city, and the SHINE Mural Festival adds new ones every year. The St. Pete Pier opened in 2020 and anchors a waterfront district with green space, restaurants, fishing spots and the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center.
