Homes for sale and local insight in Plant City.
Plant City is an incorporated city in northeastern Hillsborough County, roughly midway between Brandon and Lakeland. Interstate 4 runs through the north side of the city. U.S. Route 92 is the main highway through the center of town, and State Road 39 crosses it there.
The town was first called Ichepucksassa, after a nearby Native village, and was later renamed Cork by its Irish postmaster. In 1884 Henry B. Plant extended the South Florida Railroad into town, and the community took his name. It was incorporated in 1885 and reincorporated as the City of Plant City in 1911. The area later turned to strawberries, earning the nickname "Winter Strawberry Capital of the World."
Downtown, the Union Station Depot was built in 1908-1909 where two rail lines crossed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and now houses the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum. McCall Park runs alongside the rail line through downtown and hosts regular events. The 1914 Plant City High School building is home to the East Hillsborough Historical Society's research center.
