About Dade City

Dade City is the county seat of Pasco County, Florida. It sits in the rolling hills of eastern Pasco County and serves as a commercial center for the surrounding area. The city is named for U.S. Army Major Francis L. Dade, who was killed in the Dade Battle at the start of the Second Seminole War. Its economy was historically based on citrus and cattle.

The nearby settlement of Fort Dade existed in the 1870s and 1880s. When a railroad was built a few miles east, local business owners moved closer to it, and the new settlement took the Dade City name. The Historic Pasco County Courthouse, built in 1909 and designed by architect Edward Columbus Hosford, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as are the Church Street Historic District and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Depot.

Downtown Dade City has historic commercial buildings, restaurants and gift shops. Local history is presented at the Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum and the Pioneer Florida Museum. Events include the Kumquat Festival, held downtown each January, as well as Church Street Christmas. Saint Leo University and Pasco-Hernando State College are in the greater Dade City area.
