About Clearwater

Clearwater lies between the Gulf to the west and Tampa Bay to the southeast, and it is the county seat of Pinellas County. Clearwater Beach sits on a separate barrier island across the Intracoastal Waterway from the mainland. The Clearwater Memorial Causeway, part of State Road 60, connects the two. Downtown Clearwater faces Clearwater Harbor.

According to the City of Clearwater, the name refers to the freshwater springs along the shore. Early settlers called the area Clear Water Harbor. The name became one word in 1895, and "Harbor" was dropped in 1906. Fort Harrison was built on the bluffs where the Harbor Oaks neighborhood now stands during the Seminole Wars. Clearwater was incorporated on May 27, 1915, a wooden bridge to Clearwater Beach followed in 1916, and the Capitol Theatre opened downtown in 1921.

Clearwater has been the spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies since 1940. Today the team trains at BayCare Ballpark, which is also home to the Clearwater Threshers. Downtown, Coachman Park has open lawns, gardens, a splash pad, a waterfront promenade and The BayCare Sound, a covered music venue. On the beach, Pier 60 hosts the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 gathering with artisans and street performers.
